Uses for Stem Cell Therapy
Currently, stem cell therapy is most commonly used for:
- Cartilage tears
- Osteoarthritis (ankle, knee, hip, shoulder)
- Sacroiliac joint pain
- Spinal pain
- Pinched nerves
How it Works
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells located in the body. These cells have the potential to become specialized cells, which is what allows them to contribute so much toward healing a specific area.
Stem cells are obtained from the patient, either by aspirating tissue from the hip bone or from fat cells. With a centrifuge, the cells are separated in order to narrow down those that will help to heal tissue. These concentrated cells are placed into a new syringe, where they are ready for treatment. By using the patient’s own stem cells, negative reactions are reduced.
Your pain doctor will use ultrasound or fluoroscopy technology to identify the targeted area. With this technology, the needle is guided to the correct area where the stem cells are injected with precision.
What to Expect
Most patients respond after just one injection. However, some patients require two or three injections. The number of injections you will need depend on many factors, including your source of chronic pain.
You’ll likely notice significant benefits right away, but the full results of stem cell therapy may not surface until two to three months following your final injection.
